More data security breach prevention tools are perhaps what were needed by the Brinker International owned Chili’s restaurant chain. Chili’s has responded swiftly and well to an incident that has seen customers’ payment card information stolen, but of course, the restaurant chain would have preferred to prevent the incident in the first place.
Chili’s has not revealed the number of stores that suffered a data security breach prevention failure, nor the number of customers affected in the attack at this time. What the chain has revealed, in a statement, is that malware was able to gain unauthorized access to credit and debit card details of customers as they made restaurant payments.
There’s no reason to believe any other information has been stolen at this time. The malware operated, to the organizations best knowledge at the moment, from March to April of this year. The company said in a statement:
“Some Chili’s restaurants have been impacted by a data incident, which may have resulted in unauthorized access or acquisition of your payment card data.
“We sincerely apologize to those who may have been affected and assure you we are working diligently to resolve this incident.”
To be fair to the organization, their response has been fast, and the level of customer service and advice to those affected in the company’s statement is very good. And it might not seem it, but the response time has been fast from Chili’s, so often we don’t see these incidents announced until months or even years down the line. The company clearly had procedures in place to catch incidents like this, unfortunately, it just didn’t manage to catch it earlier in the process.
Data security breach prevention should be a major goal of any organizations cyber security plan. It’s not an easy thing. If it was, we wouldn’t so regularly see news stories of breaches and attacks. For every organization out there, there are an equal number of cybercriminals constantly trying to breach their defences and expose their data.
That’s why organizations need cyber security solutions that don’t take chances with data or files. That’s what we try to give organizations here at Global Data Sentinel. Our approach to data security doesn’t cut any corners. We use extensive encryption, of the most secure type, to protect and defend every piece of data on your network, instead of just trying to protect breaches of your network overall.
